PS Vita, What Is Cross Platform Play?

You may have heard about something that involves a collaboration between the PlayStation 3 and Vita and games, it’s something they’re calling Crossplay, but what does that mean to you and why should you care? (That seems to be the thing nowadays, asking what it means and stuff…)

PS VITA (PlayStation Vita)Basically, you buy a game on the PlayStation 3, you get it on the Vita, too.
Pay once, get it on both systems and to be honest, if that doesn’t boost sales immensely, then people must hate videogaming. So many times before have people cried that they should get game X on Y system, because they bought it on Z and now (or at least, when the Vita is launched), you’ll be able to. At least, just have the portable version, anyway.
To start off with, the following titles will be available from launch:

  • MotorStorm RC
  • Hustle Kings
  • Top Darts
  • WipEout HD
  • HD Fury DLC for WipEout 2048 (available later in Spring)
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC

If you already own any of those, then you will be able to download them onto your Vita for free. The innovative thing about this, is the new Cross Platform Play or Crossplay for short which means that you can play a game on the Vita against someone playing on the PlayStation 3 version. For example, you’re playing Hustle Kings on your Vita and someone on the PlayStation 3 wants to play with you, you don’t have to do anything, just start a multiplayer game.
There will obviously more titles in the future that will incorporate the Cross Platform Play feature, but this is a great move by Sony. So what if they charge an extra £1 or so than it should normally cost, maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but when you’re getting the portable version for free (kind of like PSP Minis), it’s worth it.
