Fall Out Boy Joins Beat Saber

Fall Out Boy joins Beat Saber with a music pack containing their biggest hits for you to swing those controllers, chop cubes and make it to the end.

I’m a fan of music rhythm games such as Audiosurf and Beat Hazard, so when Beat Saber was announced, I was so excited, but didn’t have a Virtual Reality device for the PC and I was having problems with PSVR (PlayStation VR) at the time.

I would watch YouTube videos and Twitch streams of people playing to see what it was like and how it was played. VR devices were a little too expensive at the time too with ‘lower-end’ ones starting at around £500, so I couldn’t get into it even though I really wanted to play Beat Saber.

Then, at the end of 2020, the Oculus Rift S dropped in price. First to £299 (when I bought it from Amazon) and then typically not long after, £249.

Fast forward to now and thanks to fantastic, understanding and extremely generous PR, I finally managed to get Beat Saber and even the new Fall Out Boy Music Pack (I keep almost typing Fallout due to playing Fallout 4 so much).

Fall Out Boy Music Pack

Our shows are flat out filled with pyro—it’s rock n roll,” says Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. “That’s why our first VR collab had to have a TON of it… this will be the biggest rock show that Beat Saber has ever seen. Turn it up!

I know this is a week late, but for those of you who don’t know yet, here are the tracks you get in the pack:

  • Centuries
  • Thnks fr th Mmrs
  • This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race
  • Immortals
  • My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)
  • I Don’t Care
  • Dance, Dance
  • Irresistible

Due to not ever playing before and only being fairly decent at Guitar Hero, I was WAY out of my league when first attempting Centuries. Even on Normal I would fail after about 30 seconds, much practise was needed.

There was an update to Beat Saber at the same time the music pack was released which includes the new element to the gameplay previously implemented in v1.20.0, Arc and Chain Notes, you can see a demonstration of this in the trailer.

Beat Saber v1.20.0 main notes:

  • Added 6-song Original Soundtrack V
  • Added new environment containing new light system
  • Added new note type ‘Arc’, a long sliding beam that extends between notes allowing better expression of longer sounds
  • Added new note type ‘Chain’, a short series of thin notes with a small gap between them
  • Scoring backend has been changed to account for new type notes, including when score is processed in real time
  • Added slanted/diagonal Arrowless notes

It’s the Arc notes that get you! You swipe to hit the first cube, then you have to follow a trail to the next cube and some of them can consist of three or four cubes, sometimes you have to hit two cubes and even keep trailing while hitting cubes with the other hand.

While the Fall Out Boy music pack works for both versions, the Beat Saber base game isn’t cross-compatible, so if you’re buying from the Oculus Store, be sure to get the version for the headset you own. For the Quest/2 version, visit here and for the Rift/S version, visit here.

Last but not least, a bit of news about the upcoming Meta Quest Gaming Showcase (previously known as the Oculus Gaming Showcase) which is coming your way on April 20th.
